It’s Always Cool at the Art Museum

Take a break from the heat of July to enjoy a full range activities at the Greenville County Museum of Art. Whether you’re interested in a reflective trip through South Carolina history or the annual Museum Community Day, this month quite literally offers something for almost every taste.

Community Day: July 18, 2–4 pm
The giant doors swing wide on Saturday, July 18 for one of the Museum’s popular Community Days. Held annually, these special celebrations bring families together to enjoy art, entertainment, and family fun. This Community Day centers on Art & Artists of South Carolina, with activities for adults and children, from demonstrations by local artists to make-and-take projects for the youngsters. Of course, admission is free. Art & Artists of South Carolina is a dramatic and expansive selection of art from Colonial times to the present. This project brings together key elements of the Museum’s Southern Collection, along with work by such artists as Jasper Johns, Andrew Wyeth, and William H. Johnson. This month, abstractions with a South Carolina theme are also on view in Ideas Distanced from Objects.

Andrew Wyeth: The Greenville Collection
On Thursday, July 16 at 6:30, Curator Martha Severens wraps up a schedule of gallery talks about Andrew Wyeth with Life and Death in the Paintings of Andrew Wyeth. The Wyeth Collection received a wonderful new addition in mid-April with the gift of the 1946 drybrush watercolor Four Poster from Spartanburg industrialist Roger Milliken. A news release details the information and provides a photo of the painting. Four Poster joins the newly-acquired painting Eagle Quill in the exhibition.

The Museum is open Tuesday–Saturday from 11–5, remaining open until 8 on Thursday evenings. On Sundays, we're open from 1–5. Galleries are closed on Mondays and major holidays. Admission is always absolutely free.

Closed July 4
The Museum will be closed on July 4 in observance of Independence Day.
