art activities - March
July's art activity brings science into the mix!

Invisible Painting!

Here's your recipe:

a cup
4 tablespoons of baking soda,
4 tablespoons of  water
sheets of white paper,
purple grape juice,  and
a paint brush or cotton swab.

Dissolve both the baking soda and the water in the cup. Dip the paint brush or cotton swab in this mixture and start to draw anything you want. You will see water on your paper, not color.

Let the watery drawing dry completely. When the paper is dry, brush purple grape juice over it to reveal your drawing.  The picture mysteriously appears in blue-green colors.  Now let this dry too.

You have done a science-based experiment using an acid (grape juice) and a base (baking soda).

Bet you didn’t know you could do art and science together!
