
Watermedia and Collage Workshop

Artists of all levels will be introduced to myriad approaches to creating representational collage paintings. Students will learn staining and dying techniques, working with inks and acrylics on art tissue and rice papers. Papers will be combined with watercolor or developed into collage paintings. This class emphasizes experimentation, color and design, and new ways to incorporate textures and surfaces to create exciting compositions. Materials list mailed.
Photography
Finding your Passion in Portrait Photography

Students will develop their own styles of portrait photography, especially in embracing the character of their subjects. Topics include choosing natural or studio light, backgrounds, to pose or not to pose, shooting on location, and making people feel comfortable in front of the camera. Class time will be divided among demonstrations, hands–on photography, critique and surveying the styles of acclaimed portrait photographers. Participants are asked to bring to the first class a photo of one person they want to photograph for homework assignments, someone they have easy access to outside of class, such as a child, neighbor, or friend. Bring a camera to class and be responsible for developing work outside of class in either film or digital format.
Nature Photography: Springtime in the Appalachians

Put on your hiking boots, grab a camera, and join photographer Diane Hopkins-Hughs and naturalist Anne Martin to photograph Upstate South Carolina’s beautiful forests. Hikes are scheduled to coincide with the flora and fauna of spring wildflowers. The emphasis will be on seeing and composing details as well as landscape. Students should bring cameras, a bag lunch and gas money. Participants will be responsible for developing their photos outside of class in either film or digital format.

Oil Painting Techniques

Combine the best of two key techniques, wet on wet and glazing, to create oil paintings with depth and dimension. Beginning to advanced students will work from still life and live models to improve their mastery of working in the oil medium. Participants will begin each painting with the wet on wet technique, and finish it the next class with glazing. Color mixing will be an on–going topic throughout the course. Materials list mailed.
Watercolor: Elements of a Spring Scene

Capture the colorful essence of a spring landscape in watercolor. Students will concentrate on the use of color, light, tone, distance, shadows, textures, skies and water reflections—techniques essential to effective landscape interpretation. Artists will learn to maximize the use of both plein air sketches and photos for reference. Watercolor Workshop

Join Charleston watercolorist Mary Whyte as she returns to the Museum for a sixth year to teach the magic of her medium. Each day, students will work from a seated model to capture the essence of form, personality and likeness. From wash and glazing techniques to the fundamentals of mixing color and creating strong compositions, this class is a must for students of all levels. It is carefully organized to provide a foundation for the development of individual style. Students will be inspired and energized and will be treated to a focused encounter with selections from the Museum’s Andrew Wyeth collection with Mary Whyte and Museum Curator Martha Severens. Experimental Design in Watermedia

Form and Function: Home and Garden Pottery

(310D08) Thursday, 6 sessions, April 3–May 8, 6–9 pm, GCMA Ceramics studio, $169Using the pottery wheel and basic hand–building techniques, learn how to take a simple form and make it unique by drawing from personal inspiration. Projects include shapes such as flower vases and small container gardens made from red earthenware clay. Decorating techniques, including the use of vibrant low–fire underglazes, will be explored. Clay, glazes, and firings are included in the course fee.
Raku Workshop

Get all fired up as you create Japanese–style pottery in a flash—literally! Using this 400–year–old technique, pots are rapidly fired and removed from a red–hot kiln to achieve a variety of surface textures and finishes. Horsehair, straw and a variety of glazes will be used to achieve spectacular results. The workshop includes demonstrations, discussions and plenty of hands–on time. Each student should bring 4 bisque–fired pots to fire throughout the day. NO GREENWARE AND NO COMMERCIAL BISQUEWARE PLEASE!

Fine–Tuning the Figure: Hands, Feet, and Faces

Learn the intricacies and techniques necessary to accurately render hands, feet and faces in this figure study class for students of all levels. This continuing course is designed for students who want to explore figure drawing with instruction offered at an individual level. Each class will include 30 minutes of sketching poses and a 2–hour drawing pose followed

Sharpen your pencils and get ready to learn techniques you will use again and again to render favorite subjects in graphite. Students of all levels will be introduced to an approach that will yield less frustration, more fun and more accurate and realistic drawings. This class will help you develop the foundation for strong, exciting drawings, while discovering the specific skills necessary to draw well with confidence. Through demonstrations and individual attention, participants will learn to use light and shadow to create the appearance of three dimensions (chiaroscuro), develop precise proportions, and create accurate contours. Figure Drawing studio

Work independently in a group of intermediate and advanced students to draw or paint the human form from a live model. Students are free to choose the medium, drawing surface and technique they prefer. Each session will begin with quick gestural studies and progress to one or more longer poses. Drawing in Pencil and Painting in Pastel (grades K–2)

Young Potters (grades 3–6)

Children will learn the basics of throwing on the potter's wheel including centering, trimming and finishing. By integrating some hand–building techniques, they will create fun and functional works of art. Cups and bowls will be made of red earthenware clay and decorated with food–safe glazes. Materials included.Youngsters at all grade levels find inspiration and enrichment in summer art classes at the Museum of Art. Classes are stimulating and fun, and they’re scheduled in a compact format that makes it easy to plan the family vacation. Art camps at the Museum are unique because the facility offers a blended experience. Children can see original art in the galleries and then experiment in the studio with what they have learned. Splash it, wash it, lift it, pour it, dry it, feather it, wax it, sand it or add a pinch of salt for a touch of the stars. Learn just how much fun watercolors can be. Participants will also explore techniques and processes from the beginning pencil study to the presentation of the final painting.
